mason/canning jar bird feeder tutorial

Tomorrow is Giveaway Day!

Be sure to visit Sew Mama Sew's blog
for the list of all the giveaways :)

Here is the mason/canning jar you will need for this project.

This chick feeder is what you will need for the base of your
bird feeder.  You can find these at your local Home & Ranch,
or Feed Store. (not sure what the actual name of it is tho)

Mr. P is drilling the hole in the center bottom
of the mason jar.  You will need a 5/16" Carbide
Tipped drill bit,for glass,tile & ceramics.
You will also need a 3/16x2 eye bolt, used to
attach the plate to the jar.

Mr. P drilling the hole in the bottom of the glass
plate.
I found this pretty plate yesterday at a yard sale!
You don't need any specific size plate.  Just one that
catches your eye :)  yard Sales and Thrift stores are
great places to look!  You might also find something
in your own cupboard that you no longer use.

The last things you will need are bird seed, and some
type of hanger.  We used an old piece of small link chain.
You could use plastic coated wire (like what is used for clothes
line) or string or twine.
To fill your bird feeder with seed, turn the jar upside down
and remove the chick feeder base.  Pour in the bird seed,
then re-attach the chick feeder and quickly turn right side up.

Here are my two new bird feeders in our little apple tree!
Now if Mr. Squirrel will stay out, Ha Ha!
I am hoping that the plate will help keep him out :)

  1. That's a neat idea!! But do you REALLY think you can make it squirrel proof?!! We've just given up and leave some for the birds and then a pile of seeds at the bottom of the tree for the squirrels!!

  2. I'm kinda into bird feeders right now.Made a couple teacup ones. How was it drilling into the glass? I wanna try it, but a little apprehensive. Great job on the bird feeder; I love the plate. BTW, visiting from Sew Many Ways.

    1. I do garden creations for my business. I choose to use a Diamond drill bit and put water in the rim of where I’m drilling to keep the bit cool, if there’s no rim you can create one with hot glue and peel it off afterward, or just use a cup with water and periodically tip some into the work surface of the plate

    2. Squirrel proofing. I've tried everything. What works for me is a baffle on a pole under the feeders. It has to be far enough away so the squirrel can't jump to the feeder and with enough separation so they can reach the feeder from beneath. Sold at bird stores for about $6 -$8.

  5. I love the idea and never knew there was a drill bit specifically for glass - I'll be letting my husband know - maybe we can make one together, too? I'm popping over from the linky party at http://www.rocknquilts.blogspot.com
Thanks for sharing your tutorial there on Toot-torial Tuesdays!

  6. I found this tutorial after seeing some feeders at the swanky pet store nearby in a similar style. I'm so excited to make mine, especially sans all the silly beads and for a fraction of the price! I think they were $50 or something at the shop (nutters!)

  7. I love this idea! So much more interesting and original than the feeders you find at Lowes and Home Depot Reminds me of feeding the chickens when I was a kid. I'm putting this on my "to make" project list!

  11. I saw them at a craft show this weekend for $25. Checked and saw how much it is going to cost to make. Will enjoy trying a new project and hopefully have Christmas ideas.

  12. The tractor supply near us has the chick feeders in red plastic or galvanized. ($3.49 and $4.29.) I paid under $4.00 for some nice cut crystal plates. e bolts $.89. I bought 1 dozen canning jars for $12.99. The drill bit was $7.99, but will last a long time. We broke 1 jar and one plate so far. I just went to the Dollar store and bought some plastic cut glass looking plates, so I'll try these in order to make them cheaper! These are so nice, easy to make, and inexpensive. All my bird loving and yard loving friends are going to love their Christmas gift this year!

  13. Did you put any special washer or rubber gasket of any kind between the plate and the jar in order to stop leaks during rain or is that a problem?

    1. Just a regular ole rubber washer has worked fine so far.

  14. I've been making similar bird feeders for over 8 years. I can't believe you are able to drill the bottle and plate as shown in your tutorial photos with a handheld drill. What keeps that jar from just hopping away when you put enough pressure on it to drill the hole?

  15. My hubby has not had any problem with the jar "hopping" but then he has a ton of arm strength. He did have problems with other bits breaking/cracking the jars, but since he started using this bit that has not been an issue.

  16. I have used a tile/glass drill bit, but what kind does your hubby use?

  17. For squirrels running up the feeder poles I take a medium sized pot that plays come in paint them and put it on open side down. Squirrels get under ther and can't get to the food, disgustingly they leave.lol

  18. Plants, not play come in. Auto correct.

  19. How do you attach the eye bolt etc. in smaller bottles. Thank you
