Meet Star Granny (January's Lovely Finish)

I can not believe how quickly this month has just screamed by!  At the beginning of the month I decided that this month's project for A Lovely Year of Finishes would be a quilt for my mom!  The idea has been there since last year when I raided her stash while visiting asked her if she would give me some of her stash.

My first thought was to make a quilt using only granny square blocks, but when I actually started pulling the fabrics I decided to include another block for a little interest.  The second block is called Scrap Jar Star which by the way,I really liked and will be using again in the future.

Here she is..it was super windy and very cold after work when these photos were taken  (after just three quick photos my hands were like ice)  So the top row is not visible, because the only way to get a shot of the quilt was to hang some of it over the rail to help hold it in place.  There are five rows of four blocks each, the quilt finishes out at about 48x60.  Which will be a very manageable size for mom!  She has osteoporosis, and lost 9 inches this last year,so I wanted a quilt that she would be able to manage easily herself.

The back side is a antique white shade with an all over print of tiny leaves.  Mom loves flowers and roses are one of her favorites, the top strip is one of her fabrics, while the center one is something I had buried in my own stash, they both have roses all over.  So did you notice the problem with this side?

At first I thought that my iron was in dire need of being cleaned, that was not the problem though because after taking a minute to clean it,I realized that it was not dirty.  So the only thing I can figure is that  the iron was too hot for the fabric sheet that I used to print my label on.

At first I was so upset about the scorch mark (the large one at the bottom of the label) but after I took a minute to get a grip... and decided that since this was not fixable,I made a couple other smaller controlled scorch marks on purpose.  Why would I do that?  Well, while getting a grip my thoughts were what would mom say when I tell her how this happened?  She would probably say something like, that just makes it look like it is aged/antique...

My good friend Jamie suggested that a scrappy binding would look great on this quilt,I really liked the idea and decided to do just that.  Thanks Jamie,I really love it :0)  In spite of the little mis-hap on the back side, which by the way mom would say "adds character" I am very happy with how this one turned out!

Linking up over at the finishes party   My first of many (that is the plan anyway) finishes for 2013!!

A little Christmas...

Just a quick post to show some quilty/crafty goings on :)

Twice the Flurry!  What you can not see is the Flurry of snow flakes outside :)  Yes I know I am a slacker for not having the tree decorated, but shortly after this photo was taken, that situation was remedied.

Inspector Midas, giving the Christmas Tree the once over ;)

Every year one of the ladies at work always asks me to make up some Christmas Ornaments that she can give to her grandchildren.  Here is a sample of what I made for her this year.

Another lady at work asked if I would make her a little pouch to hold a couple cc's and snack $$.  The only requirements were it had to be small, and it had to be black.  She was thrilled to get it today!

Hope everyone is on track and getting all those Christmas projects wound up ;)  I am off to work on some more myself!

First Granny Top Finished!

Today Mr. P went hunting,so I went sewing ;)  Determined to finish the first Granny quilt top, that is pretty much what I worked on most of the day.  It was back into the scrap basket for more white scraps...

While digging around through the rest of my stash for something to use as borders for the sides,I found a partial charm pack of...none other than Flurry!  Totally forgot that I had won that last year and only used about a third of it :)

There was enough white scraps left to finish the side borders, with two smallish rectangles about 6x4 inches left!  Talk about cutting it close,I sure hope the LQS is able to get some in soon,or I will be heading out of town.

Here are my two October blocks for Stash Bee Hive one, they were sent out on time,I just forgot to post them here.  The block for this month was posted today,so I will be working on it in the near future :)

Hope you all enjoyed the extra hour today, and were able to sew up something.

Sashing Granny ;)

The sun was fading fast by the time I finally had some blocks finished and ready for a photo shoot!  So they are a little grey.

See what I mean?  Kind of hard to tell that they are blue, the white of course you can see pretty good. (I need one of those things Madam Samm posted about the other day!

The red and white blocks look a whole lot better, since they do not blend in with the wood.

The green, red, and white blocks (my favorites ;)  Although I do like all of the blocks,I am just a green girl :)

My finished red, white, and green block,I ran out of white... okay so I still have white fabric, just not any of this particular shade, apparently the LQS,is still having issues getting any white in stock :(

Hiding at the bottom of my scrap basked was just enough to finish the other red, white and green block :)  but by that time it was too dark for any photos.

All of the sashed/finished blocks together.  So half of the blocks are now sashed, and I am in the progress of  sewing them  together.  Which means that the top of one throw is close to being done.  Yep that is right,I decided to make a throw for each of the chairs in the living room, instead of one large quilt.

So if Mr. P or I get chilled while watching movies this winter we will each have a personal cozy quilt to  warm us up!  When not in use they will be part of the Christmas/Holiday decor :)

Hope you are enjoying the weekend, and finding time to sew too :)

A little sewing

This weekend has flown by in double time!  It was a fall clean-up weekend,so not much sewing was accomplished.  What I did get sewn...

A new cell phone case for the Mr.

The back side has a loop,so that it can slide onto a belt.  I was just winging it,so am waiting to get feed back by the end of the week,on any necessary changes.

A few more granny squares.

The blues for this batch.

These are the last two for the weekend, which brings my total up to 16 :)

Hope you all had a great weekend, with time for at least a little sewing!

Granny squares up date & a request for Help!

After raking leaves for about an hour after work, then making dinner,I was able to head to the sewing room :)

First up the Blues,as you can see I did not just do this batch by picking the squares as they came.

The Reds,I am thinking maybe the center on the left block should have been white....

My favorite, the Greens, with some blue too!

The last one I had time for this evening, which brings my block total to 10 :)  You may have noticed that I have not added any sashing yet.  About that....  Since I purchased a jelly roll there were only four total strips of solids!  Two blue, one each red and green :(

My question to you my peeps is this....Do you have any idea,or know where I might purchase some of each of the solids (blue, red, green)?????  I have searched the Internet,to the best of my ability,to no avail !  Any help would be Greatly appreciated!!! :0)

Time for Granny....Squares that is

When all of the Granny Squares blocks and quilts started popping up all over blog land I added them to my "List".  Then in August while on vacation, and hanging out with Melissa from SewBitterSweet Designs we went to two of her favorite places,AKA,the local quilt shops :)

Where I picked up this sweet lil jelly roll of Flurry!  Which I had been wanting for quite some time, and it fit the bill perfectly, since I had Very Limited space in my luggage for extras.  I had already agreed to no checked bags with Mr. P.  Believe me,there was not enough room in my carry on for a flea on the way back home ;)

Last evening I was looking for some solid white so that I could start my Christmas Granny Squares Quilt.  Would you believe that I could only scrounge up enough for three blocks?  All from my scrap bin no less, guess I need to get some more soon!

My first little Granny! The thing that has drawn me to this line from the first is all of the green.  Since it is my favorite color :)

The second block, the center block looks like I fussy cut it,but that is not the case at all.  I just opened up the jelly roll and started cutting squares :)

I am pretty much just laying out the squares as they come, only changing them around so the exact same print is not next to each other.  My design board is working out so good,I might have to make another one or two!
